Retaliation

Turning the other cheek, while incredibly difficult, is often the best answer when you feel wronged by another player. Watch the following video and see if the reaction by the defender is greater than the insult caused by the attackman:

Lacrosse, like every other sport, is a game of emotions. Good and bad emotions rise up on every sound of the whistle, and at higher levels of play the onus is on the player to behave like ...

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone reading this blog had an excellent start to 2012. I want to wish all of our players, parents, coaches, and lovers of lacrosse a Happy New Year from Atlanta Youth Lacrosse. Now, onto some New Year’s Resolutions!

An interesting survey was done in 1999. It found that only 35% of Americans followed through with their New Year’s Resolutions. That is just over one third of all Americans! One of the biggest ...

Something About Stink

Something About Stink

The post below is my very first guest post! I was contacted by Mike, the owner of Odor Gladiator, a cool and revolutionary tool that “Brings the Battle to your Bag!” Mike sent me my very own Odor Gladiator as a thank you for the post, and I am very grateful to have this stink-eliminating OG for when the season begins and I start living out of my car again.

Queen Elizabeth once declared, “I take a ...

Three Steps

Three Steps

A few years ago I was paired up with two excellent youth coaches for a series of lacrosse clinics at an Atlanta middle school. The job was simple, but I had one problem. The kids were not responding to me very much. My coaching friend laid it out to me during the second clinic. “Gordon – with kids it’s best to explain things as simply as possible. That means take all the explaining you are doing and shorten it into ...

Endurance

I’m not going to lie. One of the main reasons I took to defense was because I did not have to run very much. Why Don’t You Practice in the Fall?

Why Don’t You Practice in the Fall?

Because I said so.

Well, not exactly. I could say we do not schedule team practices during Fall Ball because Coach Lou says no practices. Yet, that is still short of the mark.

I could say there are no set practices because that is how we always do things during the fall at AYL. Still, repeating the mantra of tradition for tradition’s sake is a painfully weak argument.

I need a good theory that I can back up and will address player and ...

I Can’t Turn Left!

I Can’t Turn Left!

Many youth players act like Ben Stiller’s character Derek Zoolander when they first start out because they absolutely cannot go left. They are afraid that they will drop the ball, miss a catch, or take a bad shot with their off-hand. This fear eventually turns into a phobia, and they do not even bother rolling left when it is the best option available to them. Once a player starts habitually going to their strong-hand over and over again, they become ...

This Too Shall Pass

This Too Shall Pass

Many, many years ago there lived a rich and powerful king. He was the most dominant ruler in all of the land, and he was faithfully attended by his personal servant, Mono. Mono was an exceptional servant. Earning his service to the king by accomplishing every task assigned to him. This made Mono a very arrogant man. He believed that he could do anything so long as he applied himself in his duties. The king knew Mono was arrogant, and it ...
